Small and medium-sized Spanish construction firms prioritize securing contracts and production over any R&D activity. These firms are focused on their day-to-day responsibilities and do not dedicate time to generate creative ideas. Their technological improvements arise as a result of problem-solving at the construction site. However, these innovations are not reported or shared with anyone, leading to their eventual disappearance, according to a study carried out by the Polytechnic University of Valencia.
Spain produces Ph.D.s at levels comparable to other countries in its situation. However, a minimum percentage of these degree holders work in the private sector, which entails problems for funding research. This is one of the conclusions of the study El empleo de los doctores en España y su relación con la I+D+i y los estudios de doctorado (Employment of Ph.D.s in Spain and its relation to R+D+I and doctoral studies),carried out by professors at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) and promoted by the Conference of Social Councils.
A study carried out by the University of Castilla la Mancha shows that gender diversity within research teams fosters novel solutions leading to radical innovation, in the company and in the market. According to the study, forming mixed teams of men and women in a technological context is also a critical element in increasing competitiveness.
